Eccentric City: Rise And Fall

Eccentric City: Rise and Fall, presents an exhibition based upon the beliefs and disillusionment of the Japanese artist, Keiichi Tanaami, Eccentric City: Rise and Fall is a collaboration with the Singaporean art and design collective, :phunk. The exhibition involved a selected group of students in an apprenticeship programme under :phunk, known as TRANSMISSION:LAB.

The collaboration between Tanaami and :phunk demonstrates an overlapping relation between practices in art and design. This relation is reflected in their background. Tanaami, who was one of the avant-garde members of the countercultural movement in Japan in the Sixties, began his career in advertising design, incorporating polychrome printing into his pop art works. The four individuals in :phunk collective were invited to represent their works in the Gwangju Biennale (2005) and various art fairs, while continuing an ongoing presence in the design world.

In Eccentric City: Rise and Fall, Tanaami and :phunk create intensely coloured worlds that constantly collide and clash with each other. This collaboration blurs the gaps between worlds, bringing the past closer to the present and art and design into a tense alignment.
